Who knew that a girl who has never really been much of a beach lover and rarely goes into the sea would fall in love with surfing as quickly as I did! 5 mins before my lesson started I almost chickened out… thank goodness I didn’t! Can’t wait to do it again.
On our journey back form Bodmin we drove through Bodmin Moor, stopping at the legendary Jamaica Inn immortalised in Daphne du Maurier’s novel by the same name. Built in 1750 the Inn has been a resting place for many travellers, but back in the day was mainly used by smugglers and other unsavoury characters. It has also been featured on Most Haunted, who described it as one of the spookiest programs they ever recorded. The old stables is now a museum of smuggling and Daphne du Maurier and even displays her writing desk. The original bar is still there and open for drink and if you’re brave enough you can even stay the night in the coach house.
Today’s adventures lead us to Bodmin Jail… an amazing place full of horror stories of past prisoners and their harsh punishments carried out at the jail over centuries. There are five levels to explore including the incredibly dark and eerily cold basement. You also see the execution pit, gallows, whipping post, stocks and also a derelict wing full of rows and rows of cells… which I loved and was by far the spookiest part of the building, but maybe that because we were the only people walking around that part at the time…it was great!
I set off this morning at 6.45 and headed down to Poole to drop in on my Brother and his family. There I also met up with my Mum and Dad and the three of us heading onto Cornwall together.
We arrived at our Tyler’s Cottage late afternoon and it’s perfect, absolutely beautiful and in a very chilled out area. After unpacking we went to explore the nearest village, which is Callington, had some fish and chips then poppped in to the local pub The Bears Head for a quick beer before heading back through the tiny Cornish country roads, back to the cottage to chill out for the evening… bliss.
I’m off on holiday tomorrow, one week in Cornwall with the folks and I’ve just finished my packing. We are staying in a little cottage in Callington and I’m hoping to find time to surf at Polzeath beach, pony trek over Bodmin Moor, go on the Bodmin Steam Train, visit the Museum of Witchcraft and look around the old Bodmin Jail. I’m very excited and really looking forward to chilling out but I will miss the lovely James and my cats Ellie and Tommy so very much.
